Why Certain People Trigger You (and What They're Mirroring)
That person who always gets under your skin may be one of your greatest teachers. Here's how to see what they're mirroring and catch the story your wound writes.
You know the person. Maybe it's your husband, your mom, your sister, or a friend at a party. You walk in feeling calm and centered, and within ten minutes they say one thing and you're angry. You've prayed about it, journaled about it, and promised yourself this time would be different. And still, every time you're around them, it happens again.
I used to think that meant I was failing at my spiritual work. If I were really healed, I told myself, nobody could get to me like this. My mentor Scott Haug teaches it differently, and it changed how I see every hard relationship in my life.
The people who trigger you are teachers
Scott teaches that the people who trigger us most have become some of our greatest teachers. Not because they're perfect, and not because they're right. They're teachers because they're mirroring something in us that hasn't healed yet.
That's a big shift. Instead of asking, "Why does she always do this to me?" you get to ask two gentler questions:
- What am I here to learn from this?
- What is this mirroring about a wound I haven't healed?
The other person doesn't have to change for you to grow. That's the freeing part. You stop waiting for them to finally get it, and you get your power back.
The wound writes a story
Here's the second piece, and it's the one that surprised me. When we don't understand what's happening, we make up a story about it.
Scott uses a simple example. It's a cloudy day. You wanted sun. And the story starts: of course it's cloudy. I can't even have one happy day. Something must be punishing me.
The weather has nothing to do with you. But an unhealed wound makes it about you.
Triggers work the same way. Your mother-in-law comments on how you're raising the kids, and in a split second the wound writes a whole novel: she thinks I'm a bad mom, nobody respects me, I'm never enough. The comment took five seconds. The story can run for days.
That's the pattern. Life happens, and then the wound writes the fiction. Your job isn't to stop feeling the sting. Your job is to catch the story and come back to what's actually true.
A simple practice for the next time it happens
When you feel that hot rush, try this before you react:
- Pause and name it. "I'm triggered right now." Saying it, even silently, puts a little space between you and the feeling.
- Write down the story. What did your mind decide this means about you? Get it all on paper, even the dramatic parts.
- Ask what's true. What actually happened, word for word? Separate the event from the story.
- Ask what it's mirroring. Where else in your life have you felt this exact feeling? Often it's a feeling you first met as a little girl.
- Be kind to her. That younger part of you isn't trying to ruin your relationships. She's trying to protect you the only way she learned how.
You don't have to do this perfectly. Some days you'll catch the story halfway through the argument, and that still counts.
Why this matters for manifestation
So much of what we want to call in, like peace at home, a close marriage, or more ease with money, gets blocked by patterns we can't see. Triggers show you exactly where to look. They're not proof you're doing it wrong. They're a map.
When I started treating my triggers as teachers, my relationships softened, including my marriage. I didn't become someone who never gets upset. I became someone who can get curious instead of getting stuck.
