Law of Attraction Not Working? It May Be a Field Problem, Not a Mindset Problem
If you've done the affirmations and vision boards and nothing changed, you're not broken. Scott Haug's formula: heal the wounds, shift the identity, and receive.
A lot of men find the Law of Attraction the same way. You watch a few big-name videos, you hear that if you change your thinking your reality will change, and it makes sense. So you do the work. You write the affirmations. You build the vision board. You visualize in the truck before work.
And then not much happens. The income stays about the same. The same arguments come back at home. The same procrastination shows up every Monday.
That's when the frustration sets in. Scott Haug, whose teaching I follow and coach from, describes it plainly: we learned that if we change our thinking, our reality will change, so when it doesn't, we decide either something is wrong with us or the Law of Attraction doesn't work.
There's a third option, and it's the one nobody told me about.
It's not a motivation problem
Scott says something that stopped me in my tracks: you don't have a manifestation problem, you have a field problem.
Here's what he means. The procrastination, the ceiling on your income, the way you shut down when things get tense: none of that is a motivation problem or a mindset problem. It sits deeper, in the nervous system. It's a build-up of old hurt and stress that keeps pulling you back to the same level of consciousness, over and over.
You can't clear that with a vision board. You can feel great for an hour after a visualization, but your baseline doesn't change overnight. Scott calls the overnight transformation stories the rare exception, not the rule.
Why affirmations cancel out
This was the part that made the most sense to me. Scott teaches that when you do mental exercises like affirmations and visualizations on top of an unhealed wound, the wound wins. It all cancels back out and you go back to normal.
Think of it like trying to paint over water damage. The new coat looks good for a few weeks. Then the stain comes back through, because the leak is still there.
The patterns didn't start with you
Scott also teaches that the way you relate to money, safety, and your own worth didn't start with you. Some of it comes from childhood. Some of it goes back further, to parents and grandparents who lived through poverty, war, moving to a new country, or shame they never talked about.
For a lot of us, that's a relief to hear. If you grew up watching your dad grind himself down and still worry about every bill, of course part of you is braced for scarcity. That's not a character flaw. It's a pattern that was handed down, and patterns can be healed.
The real formula
Here's how Scott sums it up, and I'd suggest writing it down:
Healing the wounds + shifting the identity + receiving what life is trying to give you.
That's the Law of Attraction as he teaches it. It's a lot more involved than "like attracts like," and it's a lot less about force.
That last part matters for driven men. Grind, hustle, and getting it done all have their place. They're important for leading a family and a business. But when it comes to manifesting, Scott teaches that you don't force it. You do the inner work, you clean the field, and then life meets you there. When the wounds are healing and your identity is shifting, you don't have to try to manifest all the time. You just cooperate more with what's coming.
Where to start this week
- Notice the loop. Pick one pattern that keeps repeating: money, conflict, or procrastination. Write it down without judging it.
- Ask where you've seen it before. In your childhood home? In your father or grandfather?
- Put the tools in their place. Affirmations and visualization aren't bad. They just work best after you've started healing what's underneath, not instead of it.
